About Hand for Handmade Foundation

Handmade traditions carry knowledge that has evolved over generations. Hand for Handmade Foundation was created with the belief that craft traditions can continue to thrive when artisans gain access to learning, collaboration and supportive networks.

Our Belief

Craft thrives when artisans gain access to learning and networks

Through their hands, artisans shape materials into objects that reflect the landscapes, cultures and histories of their communities. In India, the handmade sector continues to support millions of livelihoods.

Yet artisans today face difficult transitions. Markets are changing, new technologies influence how products are discovered and sold, and younger generations sometimes move away from traditional crafts because the future feels uncertain.

HFH works to strengthen the handmade ecosystem by connecting artisans with knowledge, institutions and opportunities that support sustainable craft enterprises.

How HFH Began

Grown from conversations across the craft ecosystem

Artisans, designers, educators and entrepreneurs often shared a common concern. While India possesses extraordinary craft traditions, artisans rarely have access to structured systems that support learning, business development and market understanding.

Many initiatives within the craft sector focus either on design or on market access. HFH was created to address a broader need — to build an ecosystem where artisans could access knowledge, networks and opportunities that strengthen their ability to sustain craft livelihoods. From these early conversations emerged Hand for Handmade Foundation.

Our Approach

Strengthening the sector requires working at multiple levels

Artisans need access to knowledge that helps them navigate changing markets. They also need opportunities to connect with designers, institutions and collaborators who can support their work.

The foundation therefore works at multiple levels. Learning initiatives build knowledge and skills. Cluster engagement supports craft communities directly. Collaborative programs connect different parts of the ecosystem. Together, these efforts contribute to a stronger, more resilient handmade sector.

Looking Forward

Craft traditions, relevant and sustainable in the present

Craft traditions hold immense cultural and creative potential. They represent knowledge systems that have evolved through generations of interaction with materials, environments and communities. By building learning platforms, supporting artisan clusters and creating spaces for collaboration, HFH hopes to contribute to a future where craft traditions continue to thrive.
